Dad’s Ultimate Weekend Getaway

Father’s Day is coming up quickly! As of this writing, we’re getting pretty close to sold out for the holiday weekend, but if you act fast, you can probably snag a reservation for the special dad in your life! It’s so fun to get out of town for special occasions, and celebrating Dad definitely qualifies as one. I love how every dad is unique, so I put together a list of activity ideas for three different types of dads. Enjoy!

For the dad who loves adventure:

Rim Country is the perfect spot for adventure! This list is by no means exhaustive, but is a great way to get started during a getaway. First, make sure you have your fishing license, grab your reel and tackle, and go fish in the East Verde River! It is stocked year-round with trout. We rarely come back empty handed after fishing excursions.

Next, get a little mud on the tires! If you have 4WD, there is no shortage of off-road trails for you. If you want to rent an off-road vehicle, there are several rental options in Payson. It’s a really fun way to see some of the areas off the beaten path.

Last, plan a hike to Water Wheel Falls. This hike is great for all levels of experience, and is really fun for all ages. This time of year, it’s so refreshing to get in the water to cool off. Pack plenty of water, snacks, water shoes, and make a day of it!

For the dad who just wants to chill:

Sometimes, a getaway means completely unplugging and unwinding. We totally get that and are big fans! First up on our suggestions for you: plan on movie night at the Lower Park Yard, if you’ll be here on a Friday or a Saturday. The movie options vary each week, but it’s always a great time to just relax with your fam.

Second, did you know we have a secret bridge going under Highway 87 here? It’s true! It’s a leisurely walk, and a great way to explore nature without exerting all of your energy. Check out the details on our blog by clicking here!

Lastly, when I think of relaxing, I think of curling up on the couch with some delicious dessert. We’ve got you covered. Grab a sampling of dessert empanadas from Pie Bar (seriously, you can’t go wrong. Just get a bunch). Cozy up on the couch, the porch swing, or on a blanket under the stars and enjoy!

For the dad who loves great food:

For being such a tiny town, we have a LOT to offer in terms of delicious food options. To get you started after checking in to your accommodations, head to Old County Inn. If you time it right, there will likely be live music too! You really can’t go wrong with any of the menu options, but we really love the Chix and Pix and the Meat Pie.

Next up, grab breakfast the next morning at The Early Bird. It’s a quaint, friendly, and delicious mountain town restaurant with all of your favorite diner staples. I love getting classic pancakes, and Carson loves any breakfast dish with eggs!

For lunch, I suggest checking out the Weekender. As the name suggests, it is not open during the week. They open at 4pm on Thursdays and are open through Sunday afternoon. The caprese board is delicious, and the Club sandwich is amazing too!

This is all just to get you started! Maybe the dad in your life is a little bit of each category. Regardless of what you end up doing, I hope that the special dad in your life feels loved, celebrated, and has a great time!
