Unique Hike: The Railroad Tunnel Trail

About 25-30 minutes from the Inn via Forest Service roads, sits a small trailhead next to the Upper East Verde River. It’s unassuming from the parking area, but I promise the Railroad Tunnel Trail will quickly become your new favorite Arizona hike. But first, a little bit of history!

In the 1800s, a man was busy dreaming of a railroad that would traverse the state North-South. The dream became a reality, and part of the plan included drilling a 3,100 foot tunnel to pass through the Mogollon Rim. Unfortunately, the wannabe railroad tycoon ran out of funds, and the tunnel construction ceased after a few dozen feet. As a result, hikers today can ascend the trail to just below the top of the Rim, and enjoy amazing views and walk inside the old tunnel.

This trail is about 4 miles out and back, and has some great elevation gain. Your heart will definitely get a workout! If your kids hike regularly, they could absolutely do this hike with you. I’d rate this trail as “Moderate.” To begin, park at the Washington Park Trailhead. There is only one trail, so it’s pretty easy to figure out where to go. For the first mile or so, you’ll be hiking along the Upper East Verde River, covered with tree canopy. Eventually, the trail will join up with an larger trail. Take a right there. Continue climbing until you see the sign for the Railroad Tunnel junction and turn right.

At this point, it’s important to stay to the left. The trail is not well marked, but if you stay left, you should be just fine. This is the shortest, but steepest part of the trail. Once you’re at the top, you’ll find the ruins of a stone cabin just next to the tunnel entrance. Turn around and soak up the incredible view, and pat yourself on the back for doing such a good job. Then, head into the tunnel to explore a bit!

Once you head back toward the Inn, stop for a bite to eat at one of the amazing local restaurants to fuel your body after a great workout! It’s important to note that there are no bathrooms at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. Cell phone service is spotty. Plan for minimal to no service while driving to the trailhead and also while hiking.

Here is a list of supplies to bring on your hike:

Hydration (I love my Osprey hydration pack!)

Snacks for the top (My favorites: Honey stinger waffles, uncrustables, nuts, and beef sticks)

Sunscreen

Basic First Aid supplies

Optional: Trekking poles

Make sure someone knows where you are and has access to your location!
