Rim Country History: Zane Grey

History buffs know that Rim Country has so much history running through it! But we’re not about keeping that on the down low – everyone should have a chance to know about the incredible history of the area. One of the most well-known bits of history is the connection between famed Western author Zane Grey and Rim Country. Keep reading to learn all about him!

In 1921, Zane Grey bought a few acres of land under what he called the “Tonto Rim,” and subsequently had a cabin built. He spent time every year in Rim Country from around 1918-1929, and the influence of the region had a profound effect on his writing.

Whilst living in Rim Country, Grey wrote 3 novels: Under the Tonto Rim, Code of the West, and To the Last Man. Beyond the books he wrote while residing here, he also wrote 23 books that were generally set in Arizona, with a number of them taking place in Payson and Rim Country.

Grey’s original cabin stood in a somewhat remote area under the Mogollon Rim. Over the years, it became a landmark for fans of his work and for local history buffs. It fell into disrepair over time, until 1963 when it was restored by a local Phoenix businessman. Sadly, in 1990, the cabin was destroyed by the Dude Fire. Because of the historical significance of the cabin, a replica was built in 2005. It now sits at Green Valley Park in Payson, just next to the Rim Country Museum. The interior of the cabin was recreated as closely as possible to the original.
