Our Stretch of the Famous Arizona Trail

Even if you’re not a hiker, you’ve likely heard of epic hiking routes like the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. But, did you know that Arizona boasts its own epic 800 mile hiking trail? The Arizona Trail stretches from the Utah border, all the way to the Mexico border, with a total of 43 “passages” or sections. Passages 26, 27, and 28 are all accessible from Pine-Strawberry, making the community a frequent stop point for hikers seeking to hike the entire trail in one incredible journey.

We often get trail hikers who are looking for a luxurious place to lay their head, a nice hot shower, and a place to get on the wifi and catch up on their Netflix while they rest and recuperate for a day or two before hitting the trail again! One night we gave one of these wonderful adventurous souls a ride from the trail head near THAT Brewery and let’s just say we all agreed a shower would do him some good! Ha! Speaking of THAT Brewery, they actually donate 5% of all AZ Trail Ale sales to help preserve and maintain the trail. So go ahead and order a double, knowing that you’re making an impact!

The closest Arizona Trail gate is located at the Pine Trailhead, which is just a short drive from the Inn. The passage is known as the Highline Trail, and is beautiful! The full passage is 20.2 miles, but you can explore as much or as little of it as you like.

You can expect to traverse switchbacks as you gain elevation, and will likely spot some local wildlife during your adventure! The trees stretch high into the sky, and if you hike this trail in the next few weeks, the leaves will be changing colors to bright reds, yellows, and oranges. And people say we don’t have seasons in Arizona! If you opt to hike a good portion of the trail, you will eventually cross or walk alongside several creeks and streams.

Whether you hike 2 miles or 20, make sure you snap a picture in front of the Arizona Trail sign and gate! Some people make a goal to visit every Arizona Trail gate in the state, even if they can’t hike all the miles. Tag us in your hiking pics when you go; we’d love to share! Whether you’re just here to hike a small section, or making the 800 mile long haul from Utah all the way to Mexico, we love hosting our Arizona Trail Hikers!

Hiking through the pine forests along the Mogollon Rim has always been my favorite way to recharge away from busy city life. Last fall, a friend and I tackled a day section of the trail, but locking in a cozy spot nearby after hours on our feet turned into a major hassle. I actually had to contact HotelGuides customer service on the fly to sort out a mix-up with our room confirmation before we hit the trailhead. Crisp mountain air and well-maintained scenic paths truly make northern Arizona an unforgettable outdoor getaway!
